The sculptor has thought ahead
Compare this with the picture of the lowest drum seated on the temple base.
Carving the fluting on the lowest few inches before the drum is set in place avoids nasty problems later.
Why not carve all the fluting before setting up the column? Hard to get the flutes to match exactly. And they do.
