The marriage bed model
In the very earliest Roman weddings, the couple went off for a few
moments during the reception to get started on the business of making
new Roman babies. Later in the Roman period, they waited till the
guests had gone home, but they still observed the tradition by setting
out a little bed on which the couple's spirits were supposed to rest
together.
