Vassilka Nikolova e-mailed me a week or two ago, and the following is her fuller explanation of a request for a British school to take part in a linguistic project. There are EU grants, I believe. Anyone interested?

Dear Mr Parsons,

Please, excuse my delayed answer, but I was abroad and now I've come back to school. Thank you for your reply and for putting my letter to wide access.

We want to work on a Lingua project (more about this type of projects can be found on the page of Socrates European programs), which is usually bilateral - this is why we need one partner school where Latin is on the curriculum. We prefer this school to be from England, because our major at school is English and the children can communicate. We intend this project to be centered on the following:

- Latin language as historical inheritance in our countries

- Latin proverbs which have correlatives in our languages (at the end of the project we shall unite the Latin originals with their translations in Bulgarian and English

- Latin words (or only roots) used in our languages (at the end of the project this can form a three language dictionary) - e.g. Lat. natio, Engl. nation, Bulg. nacija, etc.

In the time of the project we plan to exchange students and teachers, to discuss the way we work and to compare our schedules, so as to form a modern apprach to this ancient language, which forms the basis of our modern European culture.

This is in brief. The plan can be discussed and finalized with the partner school.

If you need more information, please, feel free to mail me. [Use the comment box and I'll pass it on]

Sincerely,

Vassilka Nikolova
