A defence of Latin written in Latin by James
Dahl, head of classics at Brighton College, graced the pages of The
Guardian yesterday, along with an English version. It was one way of
getting a protest heard, against AQA's decision to drop Latin and Greek
GCSE and A level from their list of exams.
Peter Jones wrote with his usual force and wit, in English.
I wish I could think of some effective way of persuading AQA's
profit-led bosses to see that they have a responsibility to education,
not just to shareholders. All I can do is give the decision and the
protests publicity through the ARLT web site, and hope that others will be inspired to protest in other ways.
