As 'Phaedra's Love' is revived, David Farr recalls the thrill of working on the play with its controversial author Sarah Kane

We met in a dingy little Greek café on Pembridge Road, a few yards from the Gate Theatre, London, where I was artistic director. It was summer 1995, about six months after Sarah's first play, Blasted, had opened to incendiary effect at the Royal Court theatre. I'd read but not seen the play. It had made sense to me. I wanted to know if I could somehow convince her to write a play for the Gate.
