OLD time singers donned bath robes and shower caps at the Roman Bath House in Ravenglass.
They were taking part in the national Singing in the Bath event re-enacting how the ancient Romans may have got into the groove.
Ravenglass groups such as the Amethyst Singers, led by Vic Goodwin, and
the Ratty Singers, performed rousing renditions of Est Europa Nunc
Unita, the Latin version of the European anthem, followed by Gaudeamus
Igitur, Row, Row, Row Your Boat, The Drunken Sailor, John Peel and The
End of the Road.
Mike Harrington, appearing as Cacofonix, the local bard, sang a
funky version of W H Auden’s Roman Wall Blues followed by a Latin
translation of The Hippopotamus Song. He was joined by his assistant
Lady Vesuvia who held up a scroll with words for the choir.
Mr Harrington said he was impressed how Ravenglass singers quickly put together a rousing performance.
He said: “Ravenglass did not receive long notice of the event but, in less than a week, local singers worked out a programme.
